For Fun and Profit

I have now read numerous articles with titles ending in "for fun and profit". My first article in this series was few years back on "Smashing the Stack for fun and Profit" by Aleph One. I am really curious as to who was the first one to use this in the title.

More on Reservation...

Wikipedia mentions that the reason for the implementation of reservation is the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens, such as the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, who had been subjected to thousands of years of discrimination by India's upper castes.

Well, the point to be noted here is "socially and economically backward classes" but the fact is that people who take advantage of this policy in India can hardly be categorized as backward. Ayushi, a close friend of mine and our school topper cleared every possible exam besides AIIMS. But to our surprise just another non-existant student in our class did make it to AIIMs. It didn't take us long to find out that "reservation" had a role to play here. Her father was an IAS officer (courtesy reservations again) and I think she and her family definitely didn't fit into the definition stated by Wikipedia or the government of India. Ayushi did make it to AIIMs for her post-graduation, and now she is one of the core members leading the anti-reservation protests. She tells me that they have been on hunger strike for as long as 4-5 days but no one in govt has come to address their concerns and media is giving them no coverage.

Well, the only thing I have not been able to understand is : Why doesn't government has a clause which puts economic condition as a criteria to do reservation?

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India, had something similar to say.

But may be the politicians today chose to ignore!!This new policy of govt will be a major road block in the development of our nation and creation of a caste free society. I think I would never go to a SC/ST doctor, would you?

Reservations in higher instutions

Today marks an important day in the history of India. Govt. of India is moving 50 years back by introducing 27% reservation for OBCs (Other Backward Classes). What that means is any un-derserving OBC who doesnt even deserve to sit for the prestigious IIT exam, will get a seat at your expense, just by sitting in the exam. Its amazing how politicians control your future. If you want to get more frustrated, read this conversation between Karan Thapar and Arjun Singh.

While there have been numerous protests, most significantly by doctors at AIIMS, theres hardly anything that came out of it.
Next step for future aspirants of IITs/IIMs/AIIMS: Do whatever but get yourself an OBC certificate.

India booming

Less than a year back, when the Indian stock market (Sensex) was at its peak of 6,000 , I bought a mutual fund (equity based) and immediately sold it in a month as the sensex reached a high of 7,000. I made a cool 10% profit in 1 month and couldnt have been more happier than that. However, during the past 10 months, the market has scaled to newer heights (Its more than 12,600 as of today. Yes, its past the Dow Jones) and I wonder where will it stop.

This is one of the best 1-yr stock charts (courtsey Galatime) I have ever seen.

Web 2.0 boom or bust

This is a nice roster of upcoming web2.0 companies. A bigger collection can also be found here. With so many companies doing the same stuff, and a meagre audience, I wonder how many of these will make real money ? Is it the start of web2.0 bust ?
