Wikipedia mentions that the reason for the implementation of reservation is the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens, such as the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, who had been subjected to thousands of years of discrimination by India's upper castes.
Well, the point to be noted here is "socially and economically backward classes" but the fact is that people who take advantage of this policy in India can hardly be categorized as backward. Ayushi, a close friend of mine and our school topper cleared every possible exam besides
AIIMS. But to our surprise just another non-existant student in our class did make it to AIIMs. It didn't take us long to find out that "reservation" had a role to play here. Her father was an IAS officer (courtesy reservations again) and I think she and her family definitely didn't fit into the definition stated by Wikipedia or the government of India. Ayushi did make it to AIIMs for her post-graduation, and now she is one of the core members leading the anti-reservation protests. She tells me that they have been on hunger strike for as long as 4-5 days but no one in govt has come to address their concerns and media is giving them no coverage.
Well, the only thing I have not been able to understand is : Why doesn't government has a clause which puts economic condition as a criteria to do reservation?
Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India, had something similar to say.
But may be the politicians today chose to ignore!!This new policy of govt will be a major road block in the development of our nation and creation of a caste free society. I think I would never go to a SC/ST doctor, would you?
